UNIT: Bookmaking
Lesson: Proverbial Words of Wisdom Books
Grade Level: Kindergarten
Objectives:
Students will complete the beginnings of famous proverbs, to create and illustrate new comical ones into a "peek-a-boo" book. Peek-a-boo books open up from the center outward on all four sides. When closed, they are usually tied with a ribbon. You can find professionally made Peek-a-Boo books on Amazon and other online sites. As you see in the link, advanced students can use felt and fabric to decorate their books.
Materials:
White Watercolor Paper
Construction Paper
for the cover
Procedure:
Read the beginning of several proverbs to the students allowing them to take turns suggesting answers and voting on the best one.
To make the book, fold and cut the paper following the directions at: Making Books With Children. (Archive)

Instruct students to write the beginning of each proverb on the outside of each page and its answer on the inside.
For the finishing touch, have them make an illustration in the center of the books.
Complete the books by following the directions at the website "making books with children."
These are the proverbs I used:
"People in glass houses shouldn’t..." they said, "Slam the Door!"
"Don’t count your chickens before..." They said, "You eat them!"
"A woman’s place is..." They said, "In the pool!"
"All that glitters is..." They said, "A rainbow!"
